Carbon Markets Americas 2008

60 second interview

Dipl.Ing.Peter H.Mau, General Manager, PT.Samuna International Business, Indonesia

What do you and your organization do in the Carbon Markets sector?

Our company "Samuna International Business" together with our partner "enerxi Gmbh"
develop and carry out CDM-Projects in the field of new technology kitchen equipment. We provide firewood burning Stoves free of charge to 30,000 families to switch from fossil fuel to renewable Fuel (wood/waste wood/ware coal). This provides the motivation  to plant new trees for firewood and reduce around 53,000 tons of CO2 emission per year. The lifetime of one project is 10 years.

What do you consider to be the key factors which will affect the growth of the Asian Carbon Market?
One importend factor to growth of the asian carbon market is to give a better understanding to key people and decision makers about the danger of global warming and CDM-possibilities and regulations. But the key factor for investors and developers in CDM-projects is the profit based on carbon credit certficats and the positive multi effect for the user of new technology to use renewable energy systems.

What do you consider to be the most interesting CDM developments and biggest challenges in Asia at this time?
The world needs more and more electrical energy and fuel. The need for energy will double in the next few years. Asia have the possibility to produce renewable energy and biofuel in all sectors like wind power plants, solar power plants, biomass/bio-oil power plants and sea wave-under water power plants. Re and aforestation CDM-projects and bio-oil from biomass will be a key to switch from fossil fuel to bio-fuel to produce clean energy.

What is the most interesting carbon mitigation project in Asia that you have come across and why?
The world needs clean drinking water. Windpower-hybrid-projects produce energy and clean water from seawater and is for me an importent issue which needs our attention.

But to use waste wood from forest and wood industry as firewood, and to produce bio-oil as well as reforestration in former logging areas is also importan.

For our company the CDM-stove project and the management and monitoring in East Asia is the major project because it involves step by step; hundreds & thousands of people to reducing co2 emissions and increasing the care for natural forest resources. The planting of trees will be the follow up CDM-project for our company.

How do you think Asia will be affected by future regulatory developments?
Conferences like this in Singapore are the key to bring experts, developers, investors and government-officials together. Criticise, experience, generate creativity and know-how in management, monitor the CDM projects based in special regions and the CDM-projects in Asia. All of this will have a strong affect on future UNFCCC-CDM regulations and methodologies, and will help in the future development and maturation of CDM-projects and the carbon market.
